haymaker asked me to help them create a press image for their upcoming play incorporating abe lincoln, a 50s housewife, and a jon voight-esque midnight cowboy into the most bizarre road trip. studio shoots are normally stressful, but this one was a lot of fun to set up, shoot, and edit (yes, i’m a nerd. i love photoshop).

living with the tiger debuts october 20. if this image is any indication of what the show will be like, it’s something you can’t miss.

shaleigh comerford, dancer and teacher.

i studied dance with shaleigh at ninth street dance in durham. she taught me how to dance with honesty and integrity, not to simply perform the movements. our bodies are made to communicate and be pushed to their limits.

as a clumsy person with two bad knees, this idea was hard for me. could i be a dancer? could i share my thoughts and feelings through movement? shaleigh showed me that i could. shaleigh ends each class with a mantra: thank your body for all that it has done for you today. we all should celebrate our bodies for what they are and for their immense potential.

shaleigh is leaving to further her studies of the Gaga Teaching Technique in tel aviv with ohad naharin, director of the batsheva dance company.

gaga, not to be confused with lady gaga, is a movement technique that “originated from the belief in the healing, dynamic, ever-changing power of movement.” shaleigh is one of the first eight people to travel to israel to study with naharin, and she’s going to bring it back to share it with hundreds of dancers in the states.

she has a kickstarter campaign to fund her travels and needs our help! please donate if you can.

here are some images i made of shaleigh teaching a ballet class at ninth street dance. my sister’s in the lavender leotard. she saw how much i enjoyed modern and took ballet!

i love photographing happy couples! asajah and brandon are very playful and sweet, so their photographs were a breeze to make. they met in undergrad at UNC-G, and we did their shoot at the arboretum and in parts of downtown greensboro.

the lovely haymaker folks invited me to the carolina tiger preserve out in pittsboro last month. we had a great time telling tiger jokes, singing eye of the tiger, and oh yeah-being within three feet of actual tigers.

only a chain link fence separated us from the tigers. holy crap!

akiva, dan and emily of haymaker were so thoughtful-they packed us little field trip goody bags with homemade tiger-striped cookies, juice boxes, string cheese, and a handwritten note. oh, nostalgia!

this tiger was my favorite. his name is jellybean.

of course we needed a group shot with a tiger…we decided to go the safe route and use a papier-mâché one. still fierce.

for the past few weeks i’ve been working as a guest artist with the distillery collective in raleigh on their first experiment of the season. it’s called Taboo Conversations and it stars the incredible aurelia belfield. it is a one-act play with the following characters: a suburban wife dealing with home foreclosure during a dinner party, a Buddhist in the military meditating while disarming a mortar, a feminist porn star answering all the questions you are dying to know, the girl next door wanting to be different even if it means being “ugly” and a nurse grappling with her son’s overdose as she devotes her mourning to the clean needle program. What’s left to talk about is why can’t we talk about these things.

the collective is comprised of artists from all different backgrounds that develop original creative works through a devised process. i found the collaborative process to be really inspiring and fun. i also have some prints on display in the lobby of the collective.

the show opens tonight and runs through october 1 with performances on thursdays, fridays and saturdays. i’ll post more photos when the show finishes its run, but please go see it! it’s fantastic and i’d appreciate the support.

the scrap exchange: grand reopening [09.10.11] & scrap-a-go-go dance party [07.30.11]

that’s right! a picture-heavy double post about the scrap exchange. the scrap is one of my favorite places in durham. it’s a creative reuse center designed to supply high-quality, low-cost materials for artists, educators, parents, and other creative people. i get many of my packaging materials from the scrap.

they recently had to move twice after their previous location at the liberty warehouse was condemned. the community jumped in to help out and they’re in a huge new space at golden belt, they still need funding to cover moving and building expenses. if you’re feeling generous please donate here.

the first half of these images are from the scrap’s grand reopening ceremony this past weekend-featuring the eno mountain boys, the bulltown strutters and bill bell, durham’s mayor. the mayor even led the marching band through the building! i put my own marching band skills to use walking backwards to make some of these photographs (NERD ALERT!).

here are some images from the scrap dance party. there was an aerialist, and performances from the wusses and scene of the crime rovers, another marching band. what can i say? durham loves a marching band.

the scrap really knows how to throw a party! i love being in a town full of so many creative people.
